You might think that as long as you got the right colors you will be fine but have you heard of such thing as Color value?

Having an understanding of color value is of maximum importance when we talk about making quilts . For those that do not know what I mean by the term "color value," it just simply means how light or dark the color is. The value of the color is a very important characteristic because it helps us deciding when it comes to arranging the patches of fabric for blending or contrasting with other colors.

If you don't have a lot of experience blending colors and choosing the right color value you might want to start experimenting with fabrics on a design wall. After doing this for a while you will get a better understanding of how things work and will feel more comfortable about the subject.

Now if you still don't understand what I mean well start by gathering fabrics of different colors. Put them next to each other on the wall, begin with the lightest fabric and moving across with darker pieces. After this take a few steps back. Try to see if the line blends subtly from light to dark or if there are fabrics that just stand out to disturbing the harmony of the colors? If some stand out then re sort them again until it blends is nicely.

If after resorting them a few times you still get colors that just don't seem to go with the flow do no think you are doing anything wrong. This exercise is much easier the colors are pretty close to each other but once you add multiple colors it will get pretty challenging because you are adding color warmth which is another characteristic that will be discussed in future articles.
